Okay, I finally remembered the correct name for this event and stopped calling it Roller Derby, ha! This year Theo has been participating in Lion Scouts. It is a new pilot program for the Cub/Boy Scouts that is meant for 5 year old/kindergartners. We got Theo in because he met the age requirement, but all the other boys are in Kindergarten. It's fine and Theo knows most of the boys outside of Scouts anyways.
The kids usually meet twice a month and they've done a few bakesale fundraisers, and have collected donations around the holidays at the Commissary. This past weekend was the Pinewood Derby. Theo and Mason worked on the car and created quite a nice car. Mason and I pretty much just wanted the car to be able to race, no expectations here. Mason and Theo went on Friday night to have the car entered for the race and weighed etc...Theo got his "pit pass" and was ready for Saturday morning.
We had several conversations about what it means to be a good sport, and not everyone can win...but lets face it...the boy (and all the other 5 year olds) wanted to win. We were prepared for tears, lol. It was a fun morning at the racetrack, lol. The track was set-up at the BX which was really nice because there wasn't a huge crowd and it wasn't out in the heat. The Lion heats were first and each car got to race in each lane. I think Theo enjoyed watching, but wasn't really understanding the whole thing...he just kept asking if he won. His car was pretty consistently coming in 3rd place against the Lion cars.
Throughout the morning there were races among all the dens and Theo's car got to race again, and overall he won 3rd place out of the Lions and he got a little trophy. He was so excited!!! We didn't think he was going to get anything, so we were telling him he might not get anything, but boy that frown turned upside down.
