We got super lucky with our day before in Milford Sound
because today was rainy, rainy, rainy.
We all slept in after Woodrow had Mason and I up in the night and got
ready slowly this morning. We were out
of our hotel by 11:00 and today we were driving 2/2.5 hours from Te Anau to
Queenstown. I think we all felt tired
and just quiet from the rain, that and for me the anticipation of the upcoming
airplane rides was starting to loom overhead quickly.
This was another day we had originally talked about going on
a boat cruise to a local farm, but after looking into it more we decided to
skip it, which worked out well since it was cool, rainy, and would have given
us time constraints for the day. The drive
was nice. Mountains in the background,
and as we got closer to Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu was very pretty. We were able to check-in to our hotel around
1:15pm which was nice, but I wasn’t too fond of this hotel. Definitely not a resort as it claimed to
be. I would not recommend the Goldridge
Resort.
We headed into downtown in search of lunch. Mason had scoped out Devil’s Burger and him
and the kids got food. It looked good
and they all enjoyed it. I grabbed some
food from the small deli place next door since I’m not a burger girl. Queenstown is definitely a hipster spot. Mostly everyone there seemed like they were
on their ski resort vacations. It felt a
little like college kids on winter break.
I had read that there was a gondola and luge ride that might be a fun
activity for Mason and the boys, so after lunch we drove to check it out and
get better pricing on it. Mason scoped it out in the rain, and decided on such
a rainy day it just didn’t seem worth the cost.
We drove back toward the waterfront and read up on a few other indoor
options, but the rain started to let-up so we decided to walk around the
Queenstown Gardens right along the water.
The Garden area was nice, but it was very chilly with the
lake wind blowing right against us, but the boys didn’t seem to mind. There was a clear walking path, but Woodrow
and Theo were convinced they needed to climb vertically. We got to a warmer area away from the water a
bit and the boys had a blast, literally chasing each other in circles. We also found a duck pond that Woodrow could
have stayed by the rest of the day. He
was so content to watch the ducks, and there was a small bridge over the pond
so that just made the experience for him.
We meandered back towards the car and picked up some treats on our way
back to the hotel and settled in for an earlier night since we were flying back
to Australia the next day.
The kids were happy to get baths, warm-up and have some tv
time before bed while I worked on repacking suitcases and filtering out trash
we’d accumulated along our journey.
Mason went on the search for Thai food and we were all quick to fall
asleep.
